This medium to large-sized orchid, is native to the very wet montane forests of Colombia and Ecuador, growing at high elevations (1800 to 3900 meters). It grows as an epiphyte or terrestrial plant, featuring slender, cane-like stems and firm, coriaceous leaves.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light, often tolerating more intense light than typical low-land orchids, but avoid harsh, direct midday sun.
- Temperature: This is a cool to cold-growing species. Temperatures should ideally range between 55-78°F (13-25°C). A significant drop in night temperatures is beneficial for successful blooming.
- Humidity: High humidity is essential, reflecting its very wet montane forest habitat. Maintain humidity levels above 70%, but always ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
- Watering: Water frequently and heavily, especially during active growth, ensuring the medium is moist but drains quickly. Due to its very wet natural environment, the roots should not be allowed to dry out completely.
Additional Notes
This species typically blooms on terminal, branched spikes. The small flowers, about 0.4" [1 cm] across, are a striking deep purple color with a prominent white disc on the lip.
