Sobralia crocea, is a small-to-medium-sized terrestrial or occasional epiphyte from the wet montane forests of South America. It grows at high elevations (1700 to 2700 meters) and has cane-like stems with pleated leaves.

  • Light: Thrives under bright, indirect light or moderate shade, mimicking its understory habitat. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause leaf burn.
  • Temperature: A warm to cool growing species that benefits from a natural temperature drop at night. The ideal daytime range is 68-82°F (20-28°C), with night temperatures between 59-68°F (15-20°C).
  • Humidity: Requires high relative humidity, 60-80%, to maintain the health of its thin, pleated leaves. Ensure good air circulation to prevent mold or fungal issues.
  • Watering: This terrestrial orchid demands consistent moisture. The potting mix must be kept damp but never waterlogged. Water frequently, especially during active growth, using pure water to prevent salt buildup.

Additional Notes

The plant produces successively blooming, solitary flowers on a short terminal inflorescence. The blooms are relatively small for the genus (about 2 inches) and last only one to two days. The plant has a clump-forming growth habit.
