Most aroids originate from South America and Asia, but there are also interesting representatives in Africa: Cercestis mirabilis is a rare, slow-growing, and unusual plant from this continent.
Cercestis mirabilis is a typical example for the ontogenesis, which is often found in Araceae: young plants have a very nice white veining and patterning, from the growth they remind of Philodendron. With age these patterns disappear, the leaves change their coloration and form slits and holes in the leaves, they now resemble Monstera. Like Syngonium, vegetative propagation proceeds via stolons, but these only form on very old plants.
Dr. Josef Bogner has intensively studied the African Araceae and transferred this species to the new genus Cercestis.
