This is a spectacular climbing aroid currently native to the rainforests of Venezuela, prized for its dramatic, elongated, spear-like foliage. The mature leaves are characterized by a deep, matte green upper surface and a striking, rich maroon or burgundy underside.

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct, harsh sunlight which will easily scorch the juvenile leaves.
  • Temperature: Thrives in intermediate to warm conditions, ideally between (). Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below ().
  • Humidity: Requires high humidity, ideally , to promote lush growth and prevent crispy leaf edges.
  • Watering: Water when the top 1-2 inches of the soil feel dry to the touch. It requires a well-draining, airy aroid mix. Never let the seedling sit in soggy, waterlogged soil, as this is the quickest way to cause root rot.
  • Maintenance: As a young plant, use diluted fertilizer (half-strength or less) during the growing season. Since seedlings have small root systems, check soil often to prevent overwatering. Repot gradually only when the roots fill the current pot to ensure steady, healthy growth.

Additional Notes

While this plant is grown for its foliage, mature specimens produce an inflorescence with a greenish-white spathe. The leaves are the main feature, developing a long, narrow, strap-like shape as the plant matures and begins to climb.
