Hoya

Hoya, commonly known as wax plants or wax flowers, is a diverse group of tropical flowering plants belonging to the Apocynaceae family.  The genus Hoya consists of more than 200 species, known for their attractive foliage and waxy, star-shaped flowers.

Hoyas are characterized by their succulent-like leaves, which are often fleshy, glossy, and sometimes variegated. The leaves are typically thick and leathery, helping the plants withstand periods of drought. The flowers of Hoyas are small and clustered in umbels or inflorescences, and they exhibit a wide range of colors, including white, pink, red, and yellow. The blooms are known for their waxy texture and often have a pleasant fragrance, especially during the evening hours.

One of the fascinating features of Hoyas is their unique pollination strategy. Many species have evolved to attract specific pollinators, such as moths and bees, by producing nectar that collects in intricate structures called nectar guides. These guides help guide the pollinators to the nectar source within the flowers.
